This is the Notht part of Lesvos Island with its major cities, Molyvos; is arguably the most beautiful village on Lesvos. Tiers of sturdy, red-tiled houses mount the slopes between the picturesque harbour and the castle, some standing defensively with their rear walls to the sea. Petra; sandy beach and seafront square with a core of old stone houses, many with Levantine-style balconies overhanging the streets, the eighteenth-century church of Panagia Glykofiloussa, reached via 114 rock-hewn steps on the northeast side. Madamados; famous for its pottery, including the Ali-Baba-style Kioupia (olive-oil-urns) seen through-out Lesvos, but also for the icon of Archangel Michael, whose enormous monastery of Taxiarhis. Agia Paraskevi; the place is famed for its bull-festival rite on Pentecost Saturday (seven weeks after Orthodox Easter, usually June), a festival also accompanied by horse racing. Skala Kalloni; this accommodation has been relegated west out of town to the edge of the salt marsh, which attracts hundreds of bird-watchers during the March-to-May nesting season.
