The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene

Archaeological Museum of MytileneThe three-storied building that houses the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene. Figurines, pottery and jewellery from the prehistoric period down to Roman times are displayed in the main building. Heavy objects, though, like the unique Aeolic column capitals from the temple at Klopedi, as well as important inscriptions, funerary stelai, relief sculpture, statues and coins from the Archaic to the Roman period, were placed in the service building and the courtyard.

The new building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene.The purpose of the exhibition is to provide the visitor with a view of the way of life on Lesbos from the 2nd century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., by displaying ancient Roman villas with mosaic floors, everyday objects and statues, that either had a religious character or were symbols of power and wealth. The display is completed with captions, explanatory texts, maps and models that contribute to a better understanding of the material on display.

The Museum Stratis Eleftheriades- Teriade

The Museum Stratis Eleftheriades- Teriade(1889-1983), an inspired publisher. From his cooperation with the leading artists of the 20th century, were born the so-called Great Books, which are the most important exhibits of the Museum. On a permanent basis houses the exhibition entitled "Tribute to Teriade". Painters such as Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, were given the opportunity not simply to illustrate books, but to create an artistic work through the medium of the book. In the Museum are also exhibited works by: Baudin, Bornard, Bores, Chagall, Giacometti, Grimaire, Laurence, Le Corbusier, Leger, Matisse, Miro, Picasso, as well as by: Giorgos Vakirtzis, Theophilos Hadjimichail, Manolis Kalliyiannis, Orestis Kanellis, Callirhoe Marouda, Giorgos Rorris, Yiannis Tsarouchis.

The Theophilos Museum

The Theophilos MuseumWas built in 1964 in Varia, a suburb of Mytilene, where the popular artist was born and spent his childhood years. It was built by the famous Mytilenian publisher of art books in Paris, Stratis Eleftheriades (Teriade It is built in the dusty pink local stone, which harmonizes perfectly with the extensive olive grove around it. It consists of four connecting rooms in which are displayed 86 paintings by Theophilos. Their subjects are inspired from folk art, history and mythology.

The mansion of Vareltzidaina

The mansion of VareltzidainaIs situated in the centre of the village Petra and was built in the end of the 18th century. It constitutes a characteristic example of that periods mansions, in which typical features of local architecture are combined with influences from the East as well as from North Greece. It is a two-storied building, with a solid ground floor built with stones, which adds a fort-like character to the habitation. The storey is constructed with "Baghdadi" and is divided in six rooms parametric to the chamber, which are decorated with remarkable and typical of the era frescoes.

The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos

The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of LesvosOverseen from the Ministry of Culture, was founded in 1994 aiming at the study, research, appointment, preservation and protection of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. Recognising the major geological and pale ontological value of the site, the Greek State has declared the Petrified Forest to be preserved Natural Monument (Presidential Decree 443/85). The aim of designating the Petrified Forest as such is the more effective protection and rational management of the area. The Petrified Forest is founding member of the European Geoparks Network. In February 2004 was decided its integration in the Global Network of Geoparks assisted by UNESCO.
