South East Lesvos
This is the South part of Lesvos island with its major cities, Mitilini, the main port and capital, home to about 25000, sprawls between and around two broad bays divided by a fortified promontory, and in Greek fashion often doubles as the name of the island it self. Agiassos, is nested in a remote, wooded valley under the crest of Mount Olympos, is the most beautiful hill town on Lesvos, its narrow cobbled streets lined by ranks of tiled-roof houses. Polichnitos, is known for its hot springs, the hottest in Europe (97C), you can boil your egg there like the local women do. Vatera is 55Km in total from Mytilini. The 7Km long, sandy beach here, backed by vegetated hills and looking out to Hios and Psara, offers some of the warmest, cleanest swimming on Lesvos. Due south of Mount Olympos and perched on the edge of the fan, Plomari is the only sizeable coastal settlement in the south, and indeed the second largest town on Lesvos. Thermi, at the east coast of Lesvos, on the road axis leading from the city of Mytilene to the north part of the island.
